Compact actuators for LNG cryogenic valves

The use of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) as a cheaper and less polluting alternative to diesel for generators providing the power to remote sites is becoming increasingly widespread. With many thousands of sites throughout the world, oil and gas drilling industry companies are among the operators who have introduced the technique, which involves the use of specialised trailer-based plant to deliver, store and process the gas prior to combustion.

LNG is transported to site in specially designed tankers which also store the liquid gas at the cryogenic temperature of -162º Celsius. A separate trailer, housing the re-gasification system, normally sits between the tanker and the generator. The main component of the re-gasification system is the vaporiser, which converts the LNG from liquid to gas and feeds it to the point of use. This system, together with auxiliary processes including pressure building in the tanker to improve flow, utilises scores of valves which are typically small, cryogenic and tightly arranged within a compact installation.

Those valves that are automated therefore require a particularly compact and fast acting actuator, capable of providing powerful rotary or linear drive, for isolating and modulating duties in a hazardous environment. This is a scenario that is proving to be ideal for the Rotork Schischek range of electric actuators, due to their small size, flexible power supply range, failsafe capabilities and explosionproof approvals. An increasing number of ExMax (quarter-turn) and ExRun (linear) actuators are being supplied to OEMs and fabricators in these areas and in other process applications handling LNG in cryogenic environments.

The Schischek self-adaptive universal power supply has a range of 24 to 230V, ac or dc. Explosionproof certification for Schischek actuators encompasses UL, CSA, ATEX, IECEx, GOST/RTN, INMETRO and KOSHA international standards, with safety integrity levels up to SIL3 also available with failsafe products.

Valve stroke times are suitable for fast operation and selectable at speeds between one and 120 seconds, depending on actuator model. All models are fitted as standard with internal heaters enabling cryogenic operation at ambient temperatures down to -40C Celsius.

Acceleration and angle measurement in a machine-mounted solution

The new EP1816-3008 EtherCAT Box from Beckhoff has two integrated 3-axis acceleration sensors and 16 digital inputs. The easy-to-install I/O module for harsh environments can be used to implement cost-effective vibration and shock/oscillation monitoring directly in the field. The machine-mountable device also enables tilt monitoring in longitudinal and transverse direction.

The IP 67-rated EP1816-3008 EtherCAT Box features two integrated 3-axis, 16-bit acceleration sensors with resolution options of ±2 g, ±4 g, ±8 g and ±16 g. The sampling frequency is 1 Hz to 5 kHz. These so-called MEMS (micro-electronic mechanical systems) are based on forked silicon structures, which have movements or vibrations that result in a capacitive change and a corresponding signal value.

The compact and robust EtherCAT Box supports acceleration and angle measurement directly in the field. In addition, the signals are directly available in the control system. Compared with the conventional combination of sensor and separate data sampling, this solution is more cost-effective and easier to install and integrate. Furthermore, it offers another advantage: two sensors, which are arranged at 90° angles, make the EP1816-3008 a redundant measuring system, and in addition, the results can be reliably verified by the controller.

A typical application for the 3-axis acceleration box is vibration and shock/oscillation monitoring of machines and buildings. For example, vibrations of robot arms can be monitored exactly and with no great effort via the measured accelerations. For wood sawing machines, an EP1816-3008 mounted on the work table enables reliable monitoring of the saw-blade angle adjustment through fast signal acquisition.

Moxa ioPAC 5542 rugged, Compact RTU Controller

Moxa's ioPAC 5500 RTUs offer kHz-level analog input sampling rate, giving engineers the analog data precision they need to correctly analyze events. In addition, the analog input pre-recording function allows the ioPAC 5500 RTUs to continuously record analog input data before an event trigger point for improved data completeness.

The ioPAC 5500 supports C/C++ programming capability, rail-level surge and ESD protection, a -40 to 75°C (-30 to 75°C for HSPA models) operating temperature range, UL/cUL Class 1 Division 2 and ATEX Zone 2 certifications. (PENDING)

Moxa's ioPAC 5500 RTU controllers come with Moxa's patented Active OPC server and DA-Center software. Active OPC server adds a non-polling architecture to the standard OPC protocol, giving users the advantage of push-based communication from Moxa's controllers to the SCADA systems. DA-Center, on the other hand, provides a standard OPC interface that interacts with Moxa Active OPC Server for real-time data collection.

Features and Benefits:

  • Dedicated ARM-based CPUs for the main system and I/O channels
  • Supports millisecond timestamps for digital input and analog input
  • Supports 2 kHz sampling and pre-recording for analog input
  • Supports C/C++ programming languages
  • Compliant with EN 50121-4, UL/cUL Class 1 Division 2, ATEX Zone 2 (PENDING)
  • Robust and compact design for harsh environments

Handheld Pressure Calibrator with Integral Electric Pressure Pump

OMEGA’s PCL819 combines a high performance handheld pressure calibrator with an integral electric pressure pump in a small, lightweight, handheld unit. Before this innovation, users had to manually generate pressure using cumbersome manual pumps or large, heavy boxes with limited portability and battery life. The PCL819 is only slightly larger than the PCL340 series and weighs in at a mere 1.2 kg (2.5 lb). The housing is easily contoured to fit a technicians hand with good balance top to bottom. The internal pump can generate vacuum or pressure from -12 to 300 psig. The PCL819 has an internal isolated pressure sensor with 0.025% of full scale accuracy and comes in three gauge and two absolute pressure ranges.

It is also compatible with the PCL-PM series external pressure modules which come in ranges from 5 to 5000 psig and also differential, absolute and compound ranges. A PCL-PMA module adaptor is required to use external modules. In addition to pressure the unit also has an input for Pt100 RTD sensors for temperature and can measure and simulate 4 to 20 mA current loops. The large LCD graphic display can be configured to display up to 3 variables at the same time by the user. It provides a number of convenience features such as switch testing, percent error, and a damping function. Up to 5 frequently used configuration can be stored and retrieved with one button recall.

• Internal Electric Pressure Pump Generates Pressure from -0.8 to 20 bar (-12 to 300 psi)

• Accuracy to 0.025% FS

• Source and Measure 4 to 20 mA

• 24 Vdc Loop Power Supply to Power Device Under Test
