Rotork Schischek compact explosionproof valve actuators have been selected as the reliable solution for a critical petrochemical analysis process. Ecopetrol is the largest petroleum company in Colombia, engaged in oil and gas exploration, production and refining. The company uses Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) to perform quantitative sampling separation of hydrocarbons. The process separates the hydrocarbons into four chemical groups – alkanes, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes.
Central to the operation of the process, sets of small two and three-way fast acting ball valves are used to gather the samples for analysis and precisely maintain the pressure, flow and temperature through the spectrometer.
Swift valve operation (typically less than three seconds) is essential to maintain the characteristics of the media for accurate sampling. Additional application constraints involve restricted spaces around valves, the hazardous area classification and requirements for failsafe operation, end of travel indication and low power consumption.
After considering the other options, Ecopetrol concluded that the electric Schischek actuator could satisfy all these demands with a reduced maintenance requirement in the demanding operating environment. Almost 100 Schischek RedMax actuators with associated hardware have been installed; the actuators are certified for Zones 2 and 22 hazardous area operation, environmentally protected to IP66 and equipped with self-adaptable 24 – 240V AC/DC power supplies. RedMax actuators are one of a range of electrical products designed by Schischek for explosionproof and non-explosionproof applications in the worldwide industrial, HVAC and marine industries.
Yokogawa Meters & Instruments Corporation announces that it has developed the AQ6376 optical spectrum analyzer and will release it on February 16. The AQ6376 has a wide dynamic range and can perform precise, high resolution measurements of the optical spectrum of laser light in the 1.5–3.4 μm wavelength range. The AQ6376 is a bench-top analyzer that uses dispersive spectroscopy*1 and supports the 3-μm band, an industry first.

Following extensive testing, leading glass container manufacturers are specifying the Rotork CMA electric actuator for a critical valve control function in the glass making process. The valves are used to control the temperature and pressure in the furnaces by regulating the air and gas mixture with extreme precision. Maintaining a constant temperature and pressure is essential for energy efficient glass making. Traditionally, the industry uses various pneumatic and electric actuators for the modulating and isolating valves involved, but has recognised the need for a more reliable and energy efficient universal solution for this application.
The PIEcal Model 525B Automated RTD & Thermocouple Calibrator is an industrial temperature sensor calibrator that accommodates RTDs (resistance temperature detectors) and thermocouples with its built-in NIST-traceable cold junction sensor. The PIE 525B is also suitable for use in calibration labs since its high accuracy and resolution are achieved by using an extremely stable, low drift circuit design featuring a +/- 0.05degC reference thermistor. In addition to registering actual temperature, the PIE 525B shows the precise resistance value when displaying RTD temperature. It features patented automatic detection of 2, 3 or 4 wire RTD connections and also detects when individual wire connections are open circuit. Inputs are protected up to ±60VDC against possible misconnection.
