Technip awarded flexible supply contract for Fletcher Finucane development in Australia

Technip has been awarded, by Santos Limited, a flexible pipe supply contract for the Fletcher Finucane oil field development, in Western Australia. The field is located in the Carnarvon Basin, offshore North Western Australia, at a water depth of 160 meters. The contract, which includes project management, engineering and the supply of 31 kilometers of 10.2” and 9” production flowlines*, along with 22 kilometers of 3” service lines, will start in April 2012, with delivery planned for the second semester of 2012.

This award constitutes an important milestone for Technip, as it will be the largest contract awarded to date to its flexible pipe plant, Asiaflex Products, in Tanjung Langsat, Malaysia, since the plant started operation in 2010. Totaling more than 50 kilometers of pipes, this contract solidifies the position of Technip as the primary supplier of flexible pipes in Asia Pacific. Technip’s operating centre in Perth (Australia), one of its centers of excellence for flexible product design, will carry out the project management and engineering.

Successful Migration of In-line Blending Distributed Control and Oil Movement Systems

Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), wholly owned by the Government of Bahrain, is engaged in oil exploration, drilling, production, and refining, and in the distribution, sale, and export of crude oil, refined products, and natural gas. The company owns a 250,000 barrel-a-day refinery, storage facilities for more than 14 million barrels, a marketing terminal, and a marine terminal for its petroleum products. BAPCO’s prime customers for crude oil and refined products are based in the Middle East, India, the Far East, Southeast Asia, and Africa, and 95 percent of its refined products are exported.

BAPCO was using Yokogawa’s Unix-based CENTUM CS process control system to control operations at its refinery tank farm. Due to the obsolescence of this Unix-based system, BAPCO decided to replace it with Yokogawa’s latest CENTUM VP distributed control system (DCS). In addition to the upgrade of this key tank farm system, BAPCO also replaced its oil movement system (OMS) with a Yokogawa’s OMS based on Windows 2008 Server - Enterprise Edition.

The new generation of two-pole voltage testers

A two-pole voltage tester can be found in every electrician's basic tool kit because it is the only test instrument for establishing the absence of voltage that fully complies with occupational safety regulations.

The updated standard for two-pole voltage testers (DIN VDE 0682-401:2011, DIN EN-61243-3:2010) came into effect on 1 May, 2010 and has a three-year transition period. We've acted without delay and already ensured that all our voltage testers comply with the newest standard. All six testers have been certified by TÜV and GS.

ABB wins $8.6 million order from Sappi in South Africa

Nelspruit, South Africa, March 1, 2012 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group has been awarded a large Electrification and Instrumentation (E&I) and Distributed Control System (DCS) order by Sappi Southern Africa.

ABB will engineer, procure and supply equipment for Sappi’s Ngodwana mill in Nelspruit, South Africa. This scope forms part of Sappi’s Project Go Cell, which entails the expansion of the current mill for the production of chemical cellulose. This order follows ABB’s successful implementation of Sappi Saiccor’s Amakhulu project in 2007.

Among the products to be supplied are Medium Voltage switchgear, Low Voltage MCCs incorporating intelligent motor controls, Profibus intelligent instrumentation, Variable Speed Drives and ABB’s state of the art 800xA control system. These products will support the mill’s goals of increased efficiency and lower energy consumption.

Due to the size and complexity of the project and to meet Sappi’s project deadline, ABB will have an international team of Pulp and Paper composite plant experts from South Africa, Finland and Singapore work on this project. The project team will ensure the seamless installation and completion of the electrification and automation equipment in Sappi’s required timeframes (plant production is expected to begin in 2013).

SNC- LAVALIN / AECON awarded major contract at Darlington Nuclear station

SNC-Lavalin (TSX: SNC) is pleased to announce that its joint venture with Aecon Industrial has been awarded a major contract by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to carry out the Definition Phase for the Darlington Retube and Feeder Replacement (RFR) Project.

The overall RFR Project consists of two phases – a Definition Phase from 2012 to 2016 and an Execution Phase from 2016 to 2023. The Definition Phase includes the construction of a full-scale reactor mock-up to simulate key elements of the refurbishment work, and the development, procurement and testing of specialized tooling required for the Project. It further includes the development of a detailed scope, schedule and budget for the Execution Phase, as well as procurement of reactor components for the first unit to be refurbished.

The total value of the Definition Phase is estimated at over $600 million. The value of the Execution Phase will be determined once the Definition Phase is completed. The Execution Phase, which will occur after the OPG Board and the Joint Venture agree to transition from the Definition Phase, will involve the refurbishment of all four reactor cores on a sequential basis using the tools and methods that were developed and tested during the Project’s Definition Phase.

“We are pleased to once again be partnered with Aecon. We have a great history of working together and successfully delivering projects,” said Patrick Lamarre, Executive Vice-President, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. “This award demonstrates OPG’s confidence in this team and our capabilities in the nuclear industry. The decision by OPG to approach this project in two phases is consistent with SNC-Lavalin’s best practices on project execution for large scale projects. Having an in-depth Definition Phase validates and supports the planning of the Execution Phase.”
